Mummified cats and more at The Horniman Museum

6 February 2024 (by Sarah Blaikie (sblaikie))

We tried our hands at Archaeology - it's harder than it looks!

Yesterday, Ofili Class travelled to the Horniman Museum and gardens to take part in an Ancient Egyptian workshop where added to our learning about their many Gods and Goddesses, as well as how so many artefacts from this time period have ended up in Britain for us to see and to hold.

We completed an Egyptian treasure trail around the museum, finding a mummified cat, an instrument made from bones and even a canopic jar. After donning our gloves in the workshop, we were able to touch ancient artefacts and had to guess both what they were, and at which stage in the mummification process they might have been used. We were amazed to see papyrus with hieroglyphs on that has survived for all these thousands of years, as well as a real mummy mask made from bandages and resin! We loved our visit and can't wait to tell our grown-ups at home what we saw and held for ourselves.
