Active Abstract Arting!

6 February 2024 (by Sarah Blaikie (sblaikie))

We painted outside AND on the floor...

In year 3 last week we were learning all about abstract art. We took inspiration from 'The Greats' such as Alma Thomas, Pablo Picasso, Piet Mondrian, Lee Krasner and even Jackson Pollock, which inspired us to try our very own Action Painting outdoors.

Pollock painted on huge canvases laid out on the floor and poured, flicked or dribbled the paint instead of using a brush directly on the canvas. We loved getting messy and making the bright, primary colours contrast against each other in new and different ways!

In the classroom, we thought more about how the colours and shapes in abstract paintings might make us feel, as well as how they made the artist who chose to paint them feel. We learned that Wassily Kandinsky experienced synaesthesia, which meant for him that he saw colours and shapes when listening to music. A lot of his paintings are named after the piece of music he was listening to and inspired by. We also discussed how the title of a piece of abstract art can lead us to look at it in a certain way, which can be an interesting or sometimes simplified way.
