Great Writing Year 5!

25 January 2024 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

Year 5 should feel incredibly proud of their writing today!

Year 5 are reading Floodlands by Marcus Sedgwick. The main character, Zoe, was forced to leave her home in Norwich due to rising sea levels. When rowing in search of some sort of mainland, she grew tired and fell asleep. After she woke up, she had arrived at Eel Island! Inspired by the text, Year 5 wrote about Zoe's journey from Norwich to Eel Island. The used a range of descriptive techniques such as similes, alliteration, personification and metaphors to capture the settings Zoe experienced. They also applied their previously learnt sentence knowledge and thought carefully about varying their sentence structure to make their writing more sophisticated.

Here is what some of the Y5 children said about their writing:

'I think I painted a good picture with my words so the reader can imagine the setting.'
'I think I helped my teacher to think of better similes when she said that she wasn't sure that her version included effective similes.'

Great writing Y5! Keep up the good learning!
