Painting a Picture

8 December 2023 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

Y6 children painted a picture using their descriptive techniques.

Y6 are currently studying Alfred Tennyson's poem, The Lady of Shalott. In the first four stanzas of the 1842 poem it describes a pastoral setting. The Lady of Shalott lives in an island castle in a river which flows to Camelot, but the local farmers know little about her. The Lady of Shalott suffers from a mysterious curse and must continually weave images on her loom without ever looking directly out at the world. Instead, she looks into a mirror, which reflects the busy road and the people of Camelot who pass by her island. The Year 6 children used their comprehension skills to work out unfamiliar language and phrasing in the poem so they could start to picture and understand the setting. They applied their art drawing skills to create a pastel piece showcasing the key features in the setting, such as barley, rye, lilies and aspen trees. Inspired by their artwork, they then thought about how they could use a range of descriptive techniques such as personification, metaphors, alliteration and similes to describe the setting as if it was in a modern day fiction book. The results were fantastic! Well done Year 6.
