Black History Month Poems

19 October 2023 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

Black History Month in the UK celebrates the history, arts and culture of black British people. Awareness of, and education about, the history of white British people is well-established, but black British history is underreported and underrepresented. Dedicating a month to it every year helps redress that balance. As a school, we work hard to redress that balance throughout the year, thinking about the role models we met on our learning journey.

This year, the focus for Black History Month is on the role and contributions of black women. The theme of ‘Saluting our Sisters’ highlights the crucial role that black women have played in shaping history, inspiring change, and building communities. We have spent time in our classes, and as a whole school, exploring this theme. Each class has written a poem inspired by a chosen role model. They have recorded their poems for you to enjoy. Please click on the links below to view the poems.
