Meet our London Fields Sustainability Champions!

14 September 2023 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

A group of pupils from across the school have been chosen to be our school's Sustainability Champions! This week they visited King Henry's Walk Gardens (a beautiful and magical garden just a short bus ride away from the school). Here the SCs met members from The Garden Classroom who led a session to support our commitment to developing our sustainability curriculum at London Fields. We will be working with The Garden Classroom closely throughout the year to embark on an exciting project exploring and learning more about climate change and sustainability. The project will be called 'Sustainability Now!'
During the visit, our SCs created a whole school mission statement about what sustainability is..... and here it is:
Sustainability is meeting our needs without hurting the World.
They worked to clarify five key areas, or problems, that we need to address. These were:
-Energy
-Water
-Travel
-Purchase Power
-Waste
The SCs also talked about a three part solution to address these key areas in order to meet our mission statement. These were:
-Think global
-Act local
-Get involved
The SCs also got to explore the stunning garden, discover new plants and wildlife, see lots and lots of newts in the pond, make compost, play sustainability games and discover interesting facts such as when a glass bottle is thrown away into a landfill site it will never break down or rot away completely.
Over the next few weeks, the SCs will be sharing more about their visit to King Henry's Walk Gardens (where all pupils will get to visit at some point this school year) and explaining more about the Sustainability Now! project. They are super excited and they will update you with more news very soon!
