Loving Lego!

15 June 2023 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

Y5 and Y6 proved how amazing they are at designing, making and evaluating!

As part of their Design and Technology curriculum, Y5 and Y6 took part in a Lego project that focused on applying and developing their understanding of computing to program, monitor and control products. Year 5 were set the challenge to design, make and evaluate an eco-friendly vehicle which had to be accessible for a wheelchair user and Y6 were set the challenge to design, make and evaluate an eco-friendly house which also had to be accessible for a wheelchair user.

Both year groups thoroughly enjoyed their day. They used their previous knowledge from computing to use scratch-coding to make motors work and they learned how to use a sensor to make parts of their design move when given a signal or in response to a change in the environment. Previously learnt maths and science knowledge was also used to support the making.

During the design process, all the children remembered to 'think, make, break, repeat'. The 'break' part of the process involved looking at the weaknesses of the design as it developed and make adjustments accordingly. The children were very effective at evaluating their design throughout the making stage rather than just evaluating their product at the end.

It was incredible to see how creative and imaginative the children were. They demonstrated their ability to take risks, be resourceful and innovative and think about how to use existing designs as a starting point. They left the workshop inspired and full of excitement at the thought of what new exciting designs will emerge from their generation!
