We Love The Snow!!!

12 December 2022 (by Katherine Gillard (kgillard))

Y6 were inspired by today's beautiful snow!

We couldn't resist the snow today! It looked so magical from the classroom....so we came up with a plan! We used our Creative Writing lesson to write a poem about the snow! Obviously, we needed to fully experience the snow first to generate words and phrases for our poem so we went outside for some snow fun! We reflected on how different it felt playing in the snow with our friends to when we first woke up and saw the snow! We wanted to capture that change of feeling in our poem.

When we got back to the classroom, we waved down to Barnaby the snowman and put our socks and gloves on the radiators! Then we thought about a range of poetic devices you can use to express your feelings about a particular subject...in today's case, the snow! We thought about how we could use personification, metaphors, similes, repetition and onomatopoeia for impact. We worked in groups to generate ideas and initial thoughts, then we began drafting lines for the poem. We combined some of our favourite lines to create a class poem. We hope you enjoy it!

I Love The Snow

I opened my curtains to a magical world,

A silent world transformed by falling white,

I love the snow.

The snow had settled on the windowsill,

A blanket of beauty covering the streets of London.

I love the snow.

I ventured out onto paths unmarked,

Crunch,

Crunch,

Crunch,

I love the snow.

Children squealed with delight as snow angels came alive,

Snowmen smiled,

Snowballs thrown,

I love the snow.

Pearl-coloured snowflakes danced in the sky,

Yet the frosty cold somehow warms your heart,

I love the snow.

Oh, I love the snow!
