Year 5 learnt about the surrealist movement in their recent art week.
They learnt that Surrealist artists were inspired by the subconscious. They thought truth could be found by exploring your dreams, memories and past experiences. Often this resulted in art that doesn’t make logical sense to the viewer.
The children explored the works of surrealist artists such as Salvador Dali, Leonora Carrington, Joan Miro and Paul Klee. They also explored some of the symbolism found in these pieces and the possible messages the artists were trying to convey. They created their own surrealist pieces that were inspired by the work of these artists.
