Underwood Class's visit from Eric Underwood!

11 May 2021 (by Shanice Corr (scorr))

On Wednesday 5th April, our Class Name inspiration, Eric Underwood, came to visit us!

First, he answered lots of our questions…

  • Why do you dance? “When I hear music it just makes me want to move.”

  • What movies have you been in? “I have been in Cats the movie!”

  • What’s your favourite book? “Right now, Jamie Oliver’s cooking recipes! So, I can learn to cook”

  • Why did you make brown ballet shoes? “Ballet shoes are made to match your skin colour, so your limbs look like long lines when you’re performing, but there weren’t any to match my skin colour. So, I thought it would be a good idea to have ballet shoes in all different skin tones.”

  • What is your favourite food? “I love cheese!”

Next, Eric Underwood taught us some ballet in the hall. He taught us that when you’re balancing, the most important thing is where your head is. If you keep your head completely upright, not too far forwards or backwards, then turning is much easier. It is also important to ‘spot’ when turning, finding a focus point for your eyes and whipping your head round to find it again after the turn.

We learnt the following ballet moves:

  • First, second, third, fourth and fifth (basic ballet arm and feet positions)
  • Pirouettes (a turn)
  • Step turns
  • Changements (Jumps from fifth where we switched our feet)
  • Pas De Chat (Cat jump!)

Finally, we put together a short routine that we performed in 4 groups and we all got to perform on stage!

Thank you, Eric Underwood, for visiting us, we will remember it forever!
