Outdoor Play and Learning (OPAL)

We're delighted to introduce the Outdoor Learning and Play (OPAL) Programme to London Fields Primary School.

OPAL is an award-winning school improvement programme, shaped by 20 years of action-research, that puts the focus firmly on play. It supports lasting, positive cultural change within schools and transforms the quality of play on offer to children during their breaks.

We believe that when children have space to play and relax in an environment that feels safe, supportive and stimulating they develop a stronger sense of belonging, engage more fully with their school community and create memories that stay with them. Working with OPAL will help us give every child at London Fields that space and make their play the best it can be. Research also shows that high-quality play boosts attendance, behaviour and academic achievement.

OPAL will guide our Play Team as we build a richer range of play opportunities, where children can explore, build and create together using a wide variety of materials and loose parts. From den-building and obstacle courses to quiet moments of nature exploration, these new play spaces will give children the freedom to direct their own play, develop problem-solving skills, and build resilience outdoors.

How can families help?

All-weather clothing
Outdoor play happens in all weathers and every kind of weather brings its own opportunities for exploration, discovery and fun. We encourage children to embrace it all, so please make sure they come to school dressed and ready for outdoor play, whatever the forecast.

Donations
We're collecting loose parts materials that can be easily moved, combined and woven into children's free play. Alongside what the school provides, we'd love your help building a wider range of play experiences and keeping our supplies topped up as items wear out. If you have any of the following in good working order, we'd be grateful for a donation. Items can be dropped off at the school office during school hours.
