Year Four
Year 4 Gymnastics
Year 4 have started their new topic in PE by practicing some new balancing positions with their partner!
Tech for Gen AI
Year 4, 5 and 6 were very lucky to have a fascinating insight into the technology behind generative AI and what that might mean for careers in the future and the jobs that the children could choose to do.
We had an assembly discussing what AI was and how it has developed before having some career discussions in class where we got to talk to some UBS employees about how they use and create AI in their work. We got to quiz them about how they had chosen their career and what educational goals they had accomplished in order to work in AI as well as which skills they felt were the most useful in their jobs. We wondered which of us will be developing and running AI in 20 years time and what jobs there might be that we don't even know about yet?!
Year 5 Designers Present their Learning
Children in Year Five visited Year Four to showcase their DT learning. They began by explaining they had been given the design brief to design and make an exciting cam-mechanism toy for children aged 3-5 to play with. The designers explained that cam mechanisms are made up of three components: a cam, slider and follower. The designers also shared that they had a go at disassembling a product to help them understand how it works. After considering market research, the children explained how they designed and then produced their product, with the think- make- break- repeat process running throughout. Year Four were so impressed with the final cam-mechanism toys and are excited about making their very own in the future!
Force of Nature Challenge Day at London Fields
In November ’24 our school applied for the Young Tree Champions project run by the Tree Council - a programme supported by the Mayor of London, bringing children closer to nature.
We are proud to say that our application was successful. The Young Tree Champions project involves delivering a minimum of four tree-related activities over the school year. We are also the lucky recipients of 5 container fruit trees and hedgerows which today were planted in the Edible Playground.
The day began with the children in Year 4 and the Eco team taking part in a “Force for Nature Challenge Day”, starting with an educational workshop, followed by a mapping activity, getting to know what and where nature is in our school. It was then time for the The Eco team to gather together and talk about Force of Nature careers and the skills, abilities and resources they would need should they choose a career in planting and discovering the wonder of trees. The children split into groups and chose between mapping officers, tree ambassadors and school gardeners. They came up with some brilliant ideas about the habitats they could create within the school grounds (building a pond was a popular choice!) and connecting the school and community with trees and nature.
In the afternoon, it was time to plant the trees and hedges. Equipped with gardening gloves, spades and safety advice, the children started planting the trees. The British weather stopped us from finishing our project today, but we will be back tomorrow! In a few short years, our garden will become a green oasis, helping future generations of children connect to nature.
Mini Madrid
Y4 were immersed in language, cuisine and culture with a trip to ‘Mini-Madrid’, hosted by UBS at their offices in Liverpool Street. The experience was a wonderful opportunity for children to apply and develop their Spanish learning. The day began with the children presenting their passports at passport control before exchanging some money. This was followed by a trip to the café in which the children could order and try tasty tortilla and a shopping trip where the children could use their euros to buy a range of items. The day finished with the children writing postcards about their day (in Spanish of course) and spending their last few euros on ice cream! Y4 felt more confident in showcasing their conversational skills and enjoyed meeting all the UBS volunteers too.
I would like to visit the moon!
Year 4 are really enjoying the poems in Grace Nichols' poetry book, Cosmic Disco. A group of Y4 children were set the challenge to write a poem about the moon. They took inspiration from other poems they had read and included some similar poetic devices in their poems. Using similes can be a fantastic way to help paint a picture in the reader's head and also help express your feelings about your subject matter.
The Y4 children were extremely proud of their poems and so were we!
Y4 children were also excited to hear that they will be learning more about the moon and space in future Art and Design and Science topics- we will keep you posted about how their learning develops!
