Reception visits the Post Office.

To consolidate their 'People and Communities' theme this half term, the Reception children visited their local Post Office to send a letter home. Along the way, they identified familiar places that are part of their community, including coffee shops, restaurants, the bus stop and buses, the green grocer, the medical centre and the hairdresser.

At the Post Office, they waited sensibly in line, showing confidence in following familiar routines, and used fantastic manners when asking the post office workers to mail their letters home. The rain did not slow them down; they simply put on waterproofs and continued their learning.

This experinece supported their understanding of the world around them, as they built confidence in new environments, practised social interactions and strenghtened their sense of belonging within their community.

Understanding the relationship between consecutive numbers in Reception

Understanding the relationship between consecutive numbers in Reception

This half term, Reception children have been developing their understanding of number composition and the ‘one more than/one less than’ relationship between consecutive numbers. The children have been learning that each number is one more or one less than the number before it. We use staircase patterns to help children see that each number is made by adding one more to the previous number and that consecutive numbers are linked.

To challenge their learning, the children took part in a timed activity where they built a number staircase to show their understanding of number order and relationships. They demonstrated fantastic mathematical thinking, completing the challenge in just a few minutes!

Reception children's curiosity about the world around them.

It was a lovely day of discoveries at Forest School today. The children are beginning to notice small changes in their surroundings and show great enjoyment in observing nature. They were excited to spot mushrooms growing on tree trunks, loved it when a solitary lady bird came to say hello, and used natural resources to support their play.
