Year Five
The Big Reveal of Year 5's Climate-Proof buildings of the future!
Year 5 have been working with a charity called Climate Change All Change that matches designers with primary schools to help children understand how design can mitigate some of the effects of climate change on our future lives. Year 5 spent 6 weeks designing the elevations, sections and plans of a community centre in Hackney Marshes with architects Georgia Trower and Jamie Harrington.
They then presented their designs to a team of professional architects, before Georgia and Jamie took them away to create final rendered drawings of what the future buildings could look like. Georgia and Jamie then presented us with the rendered drawings at a special celebration, putting our designs on display at Acrilycize at the Art House. The renders really brought our designs to life and were so impressive to see - we were amazed at how our imaginations had been brought to life! We really hope that some of these buildings will be built one day!
World Book day: a lovely tradition continues in Reception!
For World Book Day, our school continued its long-standing tradition of older children reading with the younger classes. This year, Reception welcomed visitors from Year 5, who spent time reading a selection of books with them.
Many of the Year 5 children remembered being in the same Reception classroom themselves just a few years ago. They were pleased to return as more confident readers and share stories with the younger children.
World Book Day in Year 5
On World Book Day, we loved dressing up as some of our favourite characters in our favourite books. A few of us dressed up as characters from our English text "The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane." We loved talking about the books that we love reading and sharing our recommendations.
Year 5 present their fantastic building designs to professional architects
Over the past 6 weeks, Year 5 has been working hard with professional architects Georgia and Jamie, to design a community centre building for Hackney Marshes that can meet any challenges that a future change in climate may bring. The aim of the project is to help combat climate anxiety in children by helping them see design as a way of mitigating any challenges that climate change may bring in the future.
As budding architects, the children have been working incredibly hard in creating section drawings, elevations and plans of their community centres as well as building 3D models of what their building could look like. This week, the children presented their ideas, drawings and models to a team of 5 professional architects. They were incredibly articulate and the professionals commented on how impressed they were by the high standard of the children's work.
Internet Safety Day in Y5!
We started our Internet Safety Day by taking part in a class assembly, discussing what internet safety is and what we can do to ensure that we keep safe online. Our main focus was to explore the benefits and dangers of AI technology and software.
We looked at scenarios and held class discussions on any dangers identified within the scenarios. We then listed safe and positive strategies that the people in the scenarios could have followed.
As a final activity, we created posters to demonstrate the uses and dangers of AI!
