Science in Year 1

We have been looking at materials  in Year 1!

In Science we have been investigating materials and their properties. We have been exploring materials around us and thinking about why certain materials are used for particular things. For example, glass is used for windows because it is transparent, plastic is used for water bottles because it is waterproof and rubber is used for tyres because it is strong and flexible. We carried out a fair test to find out which material would be best for making an umbrella head. To do this we covered an object with different materials and dropped water onto the material. If the object stayed dry we knew that the material was waterproof. If the object was wet we knew that that material could not be used to make an umbrella head. We found out that plastic was the most suitable material.
