History

London Fields School is a 2-form entry primary school with nursery, located on the southern boundary of London Fields on Westgate Street, London E8 in the London Borough of Hackney. It is a three storey brick building built in 1925/6. Although the building is not listed it is identified as a “building of townscape merit” within the Broadway Market conservation area.

History

A school first opened on the site on Westgate Street (originally as Sheep Lane in the 16thC and then Mutton lane in the 19thC, and given its current name in 1911) in 1874.

In 1874 there were 453 junior boys, 442 junior girls and 577 infants. Between 1927and 1932 it was reorganised for 360 junior boys, 360 junior girls and 408 infants. It was reorganised again between 1932 and 1936 for 640 junior mixed and 408 infants.

It appears from records that permission was granted to rebuild the school in 1914 but may not have proceeded until 1925 due to the first world war, and that the building as it now stands originally accommodated a roll of over 1100, well in excess of the number on the roll today. Various building works were carried out in the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s.
